Google Rebrands Bard Turned to Gemini with launch of Ultra 1.0
If you visit “www.bard.google.com," it won’t be working at all. If you do, it will turn out to be www.gemini.com in the web-app version.
The simple reason is that Google will rebrand Bard as Gemini by February 08, 2024. The UI/UX is similar to what it was before; nothing has changed. However, Google has also launched Gemini as a mobile app for both iOS and Android.
Now, you can see a good revolution with its new and strong AI model, Ultra 1.0 with Gemini Advanced. It is far more capable of reasoning, coding, educating, creativity, and following instructions.
“And now, we’re bringing you two new experiences — Gemini Advanced and a mobile app — to help you easily collaborate with the best of Google AI,” says Sissie Hsiao (Vice President and General Manager, Google Assistant and Gemini)
“In blind evaluations with our third-party raters, Gemini Advanced with Ultra 1.0 is now the most preferred chatbot compared to leading alternatives.”
Why did Google Change Bard to Gemini?
After this sudden change, the internet was heated up with several questions, leaving the doubt — why does Google need to rename Bard to Gemini?
Recently, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the secret during an interview with CNBC, stating, “For us, Gemini is our approach overall in terms of how we are building our most capable and safe AI model, and Bard was the most direct way that people could interact with our models so it made sense just to evolve it to be Gemini because you are talking directly to the underlying Gemini model when you use it.”
“I think it will also be the way by which we will keep advancing our models and users can experience it directly, so we thought the name change made sense, “he further continued.
What is Gemini and What Can It Do?
Gemini is the most capable and largest AI and large language model (LLM) that can amazingly compete with other modules in the market. Bard was launched on March 21, 2023, to give a direct response to the popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Previously, it was based on PaLM 2 and LaMDA, but it still needed something extraordinary. After the launch of GPT-4 on March 14, 2023, the tension has increased. That’s why the Google DeepMind team started working on another LLM model that can surpass PaLM 2.
The new LLM model called Gemini was launched on December 06, 2023, and further integrated into Google Bard. Recently, Bard has been renamed to Gemini.
This Gemini 1.0 comes in three different sizes: Gemini Nano (for on-device tasks), Gemini Pro (free versions of chatbots and assistants), and Gemini Ultra (advanced and premium versions).
“Gemini Advanced has access to Ultra 1.0, which is our most capable model to date. It just gives you more capabilities; it is particularly good at complex queries and multiturn queries, it has very good workspace integration, and it is built from the ground up to be natively multimodal, so when you attach images and queries, it shines.” Sundar Pichai stated while talking about the subscription of Gemini.
Gemini Ultra is the first-ever model that has surpassed human intelligence and GPT-4 on MMLU with a 90% score. If we take a comparative performance test with GPT-4, it performs a lot better in most aspects. So, whether it’s advanced coding or solid reasoning, a lot has been left to be unlocked.
How To Access Gemini Models?
The Pro 1.0 version of Gemini is free of cost and can be used from many Google Products like Gemini (Formerly Bard), Search, Ads, YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Play, etc. The Gemini Nano version can also be accessed by users as an in-built AI in Google’s smartphone line, Pixel.
To use the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model, you have to take a monthly subscription to the new Google One AI premium plan for $19.99 (US dollar). Within the plan, you will get 2TB of storage and integration features to add Gemini to Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and more. Currently, it has an active two months of free trial that you can try!
The app version of Gemini is rolling out in English in the regions of the United States. After a couple of weeks, it will be available in more locations and more languages, including Japanese and Korean.
Bottom Line
In the current market situation, Gemini Ultra can dominate over OpenAI’s GPT-4. But both of these giants are busy making their systems and models better. In my personal view, Gemini AI can grow stronger ahead. It just needs some good updates and improvements.
